Its - zijn or haar » answer
by PvanGent, 2013-07-15, 22:58  Spam?  78.22.129....
How should I say 'its' in Dutch? I know if nouns are 'de' or 'het' words but not if they are masculine or feminine. Can I just use 'zijn' to mean 'its' for all nouns? Is that good Dutch?

no: you can check the gender in a dictionary or on
If the word is masculine, you use "zijn", if it is feminine, "haar". See also

This is a good point. I know it's a little late to start changing this now, but most good Dutch dictionaries other than tell you not only whether a noun is het or de, but also if the de nouns (the common gender ones) are masculine or feminine. This would be a useful addition to the dict, as without it non-native speakers have to use another dictionary to know whether to refer back to common gender Dutch nouns (the de ones) as zijn or haar  (equivalent to sein or ihr) when they want to say "its".
In case you're not aware of the background to this, Dutch divides its nouns into neuter nouns, for which the word for "the" is "het", and common gender nouns, for which the word for "the" is "de". Most of the time you don't need to know whether the common gender nouns is actually masculine or actually feminine...

Good point, yes. We've been thinking about this today. I guess it would be a good thing to have this additional information as well, but currently the amount of entries which would need to be updated (around 20,000 entries in both NL language pairs) is too much to handle. Having this information in only a small fraction of the entries would be too confusing for the users, and an endless stream of reopens would be too annoying to the contributors. Maybe I'll come up with a solution for that at a later point in time.

Thanks to Paul, I have my answer....

In my vocabulary, go to top of screen, click EDIT, then from the drop down menu choose, EDIT LIST, then you can drag your words up and down the list to where you want them... When finished, click DONE.

  Thanks Paul.
prijsvoering » answer
by dutchseeker (UN), 2013-07-07, 17:03  Spam?

I was just wondering whether you could tell me what 'prijsvoering' means in this context:

De Aannemer verklaart de werf en de opdracht goed te kennen en heeft er zich van verzekerd de aangenomen opdracht aan de overeengekomen aannemingssom te kunnen uitvoeren, zonder lastens de Aannemer enige reden tot prijsvoering te kunnen inroepen.

Thanks for your help,

by Windfall (GB), 2013-07-11, 18:11  Spam?
I believe prijsvoering usually means "pricing".
One definition of this is "setting a price" and I think "setting a price" (presumably one that's different from the price contracted for (aannemingssom)) is likely to be what is meant here. To my mind this makes an odd sentence, as I don't see why you'd be allowed to agree one price and then set another price, but perhaps I'm misunderstanding something either about one of those words or the way the law works - perhaps it includes get out clauses where you're automatically allowed to charge more if the costs to you exceed the quote you gave.
Translation for a paragraph » answer
by cancan, 2013-06-29, 10:11  Spam?  218.212.149....
Hi everyone, I have a paragraph in a legal document which I need to get a translation from Dutch to English, would be very grateful if anyone could explain to me what it means, I have checked with Google Translate, Microsoft, Bing, Babylon but am unable to understand it still:

Artikel4: TegenstelBaarheid
Partijen zullen alles in het werk stellen om de overdacht van de algemeenheid en van al haar
essentiele bestanddelen aan derden kenbaar te maken en in het algemeen tegenover alle
derden tegenstelbaar te maken.

Appreciate any help!
Thanks everyone.
tegenstelbaarheid  #714113
by wbk (BE), 2013-07-01, 10:58  Spam?
"tegenstelbaarheid" means that third parties are legally bound to the agreement, even though they are not a contractual partner. In Belgium this is done by publishing the text in the "Belgisch Staatsblad - Moniteur Belge", in the Netherlands in the "Staatsblad (van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden)".

So I would translate your paragraph like this:

"Contract parties will make every effort to make the transfer of general property and all essential parts known to third parties and at large make the contract (tegenstelbaar) to all third parties."

thanks so much wbk!!!

Proz gives this translation of tegenstelbaar:
"has legal effect with regard to third parties"
which fits nicely with how wbk explains it.

Could someone please help me translate this to spoken dutch?

Hello Sjors,

As far as I know, there aren't any tutorials. I learned everything by looking at stuff other people made (such as Boris). If you have some experience in programming, it shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out.

Thanks in advance!
by IceSkaarj (BE), 2017-03-27, 21:42  Spam?
Hallo Sjors,

Voor zover ik weet zijn er geen tutorials. Ik leerde alles door naar dingen de kijken gemaakt door andere mensen (zoals bijvoorbeeld naar dat van Boris). Als je wat ervaring hebt met programmeren zou het niet te moeilijk mogen zijn voor jou.

Met vriendelijke groeten

Bij grote rapporten wordt in Nederland vaak het woord Bijlagenboek gebruikt voor een apart verslag met alle bijlagen. Hoe wordt dit in het Engels genoemd?
