Writing for a Dutch character in a book » answer
by Josh van James, 2015-09-24, 15:35  like dislike  Spam?  122.108.212...
I am writing a book that features a Dutch character and would like to make sure that I am using the following phrases as a Dutch person would say them.

Yes, my boy (to his son). Ja, min dreng.

The next one is a little tricky. It's some lines from a folk song. The translation doesn't need to be exact but I would like it to make sense in Dutch

Toward the edge of the world, we adventurers go. Never again shall we see our home...
Naar de rand van de wereld, we avonturiers gaan. Nooit meer zullen we zien ons huis...

Any help would be appreciated!

Writing a book doesn't happen overnight, so I hope my answer is still usefull to you...
Yes, my boy => "Ja, m'n jongen" or "Ja, mijn zoon" (a little more lofty)

Toward the edge of the world, we adventurers go. Never again shall we see our home...
Naar het einde van de wereld, zullen wij avonturiers gaan. Nooit komen we weer terug thuis...

(just a possibilty, there are many more)
Family History » answer

Hello, I have been researching my family history, and I have come across this information, although I have not been able to find a good translation. So far I have gathered that Christina Elisabeth (CE Deijlingh) was a maid, and perhaps had an illegitimate child with Rynard Boonacker, but I am still confused.

Ik lees uit de verklaring dat C.E. Deijlingh dienstmeid was in het huis van dokter Andreas Adamus Siegfried. Volgens mij (interpretatie) was Boonacker daar ook in huis (werkzaam). Juffrouw Maria Penningh ... Beëdigde Vroedvrouw wonende alhier in den Hagen dewelke ter Requisitie van Christina Elisabeth Teijling verklaarde waer ende waarteg te weezen dat de Comparente op den 29 Nov: 1771 is gehaald ten huize van zekeren Aales (of Aades) wonende in de Katerstraat alhier, dat zij Comparante aldaar gekomen...

The text cites the testimony of the midwife (MP), that she assisted at the birth of CE's son on 29.11.1771 in the Hague in the house of someone called Aales/Aades. The midwife asked CE who the father of the child was, and she stated (swore) she had never been with anyone but Mr. Boonacker.

so yes, your interpretation is correct

What does this line from Mary Poppins in Dutch mean? » answer
by TrulyScrumptious (US), 2015-04-03, 03:49  like dislike  Spam?
The line is "Zet dan maar is spontaan de conversatie op z'n kop." The context is talking about the word "Supercalifragilisticexpialidasties." I really am confused as to what "Zet dan maar" means.
Dank je!!!

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and considering joining because the system and community looks good.

I have a very large amount of high quality NL-EN terms to add, but am wondering how the system deals with synonyms.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I'm multitasking (actually translating at the moment) ;)

I am not at home here, just passing by, but everybody else seems to be on extended vacation. However, GL are similar on all sites.

Help me write a Christmas card? » answer
by msfrizzle, 2014-12-19, 19:41  like dislike  Spam?  24.55.12....

I recently made a good friend on vacation who lives in Holland.  She speaks fluent English, but I would like to send her a note in her first language as a thoughtful gesture.  I don't speak Dutch at all, unfotunately.  Can anyone help me with this translation?

"Talking to/with you always makes me smile." or "Talking with you always brings a smile to my face."

Thank you so much!  I

Could someone tell me what the term "kullekoek" means (in English or in French)? I've tried several dictionaries, all in vain.
I've found several occurrences of this term in various contexts, among which:
"Werk-stage-verhaal is 'kullekoek' ", "Aantijging rond SNS smaad en kullekoek", etc. It seems to be used as an adjective. Could someone help me????

Thank you!
