Term: | honden en handen | |
I am translating a 1933 ethnoographic article. The author describes beliefs about the soul's journey after death, including this: Op dien tocht overkomen hem eenige wederwaardigheden: hij ontmoet er een bok, die hem stooten wil, vechtende varkens, honden en handen, die hem alle den doorgang betwisten. I can understand everything except the part about "hands". What does it refer to in this context? Certainly not literal "hands"? For what it may be worth I have encountered the same phrase "honden en handen" on the internet, but again these examples don't bring me any closer to an understanding. Apologies for the length of the following examples but I want to include sufficient context. And another example: Alle poezen, paarden, honden en handen moeten maar even wachten tot volgend jaar. |
